A history steeped in tradition and hospitality

The history of the Alpenhotel Ruhpolding goes back a long way and is deeply intertwined with the region and its people. Here, in a place that has been welcoming guests from all over the world for over 150 years, not only hospitality but also a piece of local history has been written.

1872 – The birth of brewing

The finest beer is brewed for the first time in the “brewery” of today’s hotel. Max Zeller, the first “beer brewer in Ruhpolding,” lays the foundation for the tradition of the house. As early as 1873, the first extensions are made: a barrel hall, beer cellar, and bowling alley are built, giving the inn its unique charm.

1888 – The opening of the Stockmaier inn

The foundation stone for today’s Alpenhotel was laid in 1886. Italian stonemasons erected magnificent buildings, including the Hotel “Gasthof Stockmaier,” which later became the Alpenhotel Wittelsbach. In August 1888, the hotel was ceremoniously opened by Georg Stockmaier, a brewer with a vision, and his wife Maria. This marked the beginning of a history of hospitality that continues to this day.

1892 – The “glass salon” and the new construction of Villa Rauschberg

In July 1892, the restaurant’s “veranda” was opened as the “glass salon” – a highlight of the architecture of the time. A few years later, in 1898, the old bowling alley disappeared to make way for the beautiful Villa Rauschberg, which still characterizes the hotel’s appearance today.

1906 – A new chapter under Anton Gillitzer

Anton Gillitzer, a Munich native with extensive international experience in the hotel industry, bought the property and brought a breath of fresh air to the hotel. His family had already made history in Rosenheim, and he would lead the Alpenhotel into a new era.

1912 – Margarete becomes the hostess

The story takes another turn when Margarete Berghammer, daughter of a large family of innkeepers, marries Anton in 1912. She takes over responsibility with him and leads the hotel into a new era of hospitality.

1913-1920 – The “4 girls” and the challenges of war

During these years, four girls are born, including Elisabeth, who will later take over the hotel. But world history does not stop at Ruhpolding: during the First World War, their father goes to the front, but returns healthy, albeit traumatized.

The war years – the hotel as part of history

During the Second World War, the hotel is taken over by the Nazi regime, houses a war and mother-and-child home, and is eventually used by the American occupying forces. It is not until 1948 that Eduard Conrad is allowed to run the hotel as an inn again and begins the urgently needed renovations.

The 50s & 60s – A new face

From 1953 onwards, Elisabeth ran the hotel on her own and gained a high reputation as a hostess. The Hotel “Haus Wittelsbach” became a true icon of Bavarian hospitality and attracted guests from all over the world.

1964 – Rhineland charm conquers Bavaria

Wolfgang Eismann from Königswinter arrives as a guest and falls in love with Rosemarie – a story as romantic as the place itself. After several visits, the knot is tied and the two marry in 1964. Together, they take over the hotel and continue the story.

1986 – A new look for the guest rooms

In the 1980s, the hotel underwent extensive renovation. The rooms were given a new look and modern furniture from Italy was installed. The Eismann family invested in the future of the hotel, ensuring that traditions were preserved while adding modern touches.

The 4th generation – A new chapter

In 1992, Marcus returned to the Black Forest after his years of travel and brought Anja with him. Together, they took over the hotel in 2010 and began a comprehensive modernization – from the basement to the roof. Their vision combines tradition and contemporary design, making the Alpenhotel a unique place where the past merges with the future.

2017-2023 – Forward-looking changes

In recent years, the Alpenhotel has been continuously renovated and refurbished with an eye to the future. Every detail has been designed with a love of craftsmanship and a clear vision of the future. In 2016, Rosemarie and Wolfgang Eismann celebrated their golden wedding anniversary – a milestone that brought the family and the hotel even closer together.

In December 2023, a new chapter will begin: the Alpenhotel will become The Townhouse Ruhpolding. A modern concept that continues to evolve and lets the charm of years gone by shine in a new light. Here, where tradition and innovation go hand in hand, our guests experience a new dimension of hospitality.
